This book was extremely funny and the romance was rather cute. Picture this, extremely old vampire, highly feared among his peers, bites into the neck of a rubber doll (I will leave the way he does this for you to find out when you read the book) and ends up dislodging one of his fangs from the root. He needs to reattach the fang before the sun forces him into slumber and his gums seal clean. But when he makes it to the only clinic available, a 24 hour dentist office, the doctor present not only refuses to attach a "dog tooth" in a "human" but she's attacked by a group of mobsters from whom she was hiding.

When I requested this book at NetGalley, I did it solely because of its blurb. Who could turn down the chance to see our favorite classical monsters adjust to modern day times? That they feel that they need to have a support group in order to be able to deal with all the changes that come with centuries of human evolution was just the icing on the cake. Based on that premise I was expecting to have a grand time while reading the story; and I’m so glad to say that the novel delivers.

Although the story is mostly mystery and horror, none of the deaths that occur throughout the narration are described as they are happening. No, these occur behind the scenes and we later find out about their gruesomeness alongside the characters. In a story about monsters that is quite a refreshing approach, so my hat tips to Ms. Petersen.

I read this novel as part of Katie's Kick'n It Free-Style at Gotta Have Paranormal with a Kick. The challenge consisted of four groups of readers, each one with a randomly assigned book (that had been previously suggested). The books had to be free eBook downloads from the major book selling sites (mostly Amazon and B&N). My team, Feisty Femme Fatales, was assigned A Hidden Fire. NOTE: The tallies are up and our book won the challenge, it was the book with the overall best rating!!

I enjoyed the story, the author managed to refresh a concept that has, lately, become a bit overdone; I tip my hat to her for achieving this. It has many memorable characters in its roaster. Beatrice (or B, as she prefers to be called) is a strong female character and a great lead to the story. Gio is, well, he is complicated... Gio begins as a strong character, but there is one particular moment after which my perspective on him changes 180°. Among the rest of the characters we have Carwyn, one of Gio's best vampire friend, -and in my honest opinion- one of the best characters of the series. Did I mention he is a priest? Yup, he is both a priest and a vampire with a particular taste for Hawaiian shirts. Other great characters include Isadora (Beatrice's grandmother) and Caspar (Gio's butler/son/human best friend/ehh... you get the picture).

At the beginning of the story Dmitri aptly calls her a rabbit because that is how she is portrayed, skittish and nervous. As the storyline progresses she begins to believe in herself and to pick up the pieces of who she used to be before the incident, slowly stepping into the heroine role. She’s a likable character who’s maternal instincts and soft nature contrasts greatly with Dmitri’s ruthlessness.

This series had been recommended to me so many times already that I honestly lost track. Then I joined Gotta Have Paranormal with a Kick: Vets VS Newbies Reading Challenge and my partner, Vet Angela (yup, I’m the newbie of the duo) chose Angels’ Blood for me. I cannot thank her enough! There are few series that I get hooked on like “can’t stop reading.” It happened when I discovered Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost, Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward, The Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian, The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning, and it just happened again with Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter, who would have thought that ethereal beings such as angels could be so devastatingly hot!

Some of the characters (like Sam and Autumn) are intriguing and kept the story fresh. However, I just had problems with the way the main characters were portrayed. The story focuses heavily on two elements that have become my pet peeves when reading books, the love triangle between Noel, Jared and Boone and her “lust at first sight” reaction to both guys.

There are certain series or books that become so popular that in most book conversations of the genre they belong to, they get mentioned. One (mostly me) wonders if said book or series is really as good as people say, or if it's just hype. Then the cards fall on the table and you end up with a copy in your hands. Then it happens, after reading the book you become obsessed (hook, line and sinker) to the point that you wonder why on earth I didn't started this earlier. That was the process I went through with Some Girls Bite.

Once Burned finally came out today! Kindle rules! I pre-ordered my copy months ago (when the original release date was still March ^.^) I waited until midnight EST, which for me is actually 1:00am, to finally begin the story. I told my boyfriend and my sister not to bother me, I wasn’t putting the book down until I was finished; and I didn’t. It was past 7am when I was finally done with the book. Was it worth it? Oh hell yeah!

We first met Vlad at At Grave’s End, the third book on the Night Huntress Series, and he quickly became my second favorite character. Bones has the number one spot, but oh, Vlad gives him quite a fight and after this book, it’s an all-out war. Can you imagine a duel between these two?

Vlad is still his arrogant pompous self, but don’t we love him like that? Although the story is seen from Leila’s point of view the entire time, we get thrown head first into Vlad’s domain, gaining an incredibly insightful look at the best known vampire in history; but don’t you dare call him Dracula. A man that had garnered a reputation of ruthlessness so great that he acquired the moniker of “the Impaler” before he was turned into a vampire.

It takes a special type of woman to match Vlad without falling into the submissive role; and that person is found in Leila. She is a survivor, a young woman who suffered an accident as a teenager that scarred her for life and also left her with some pretty nifty abilities. After a particular situation at the beginning of the book (sorry, not telling you) these abilities have gone public and have placed her in right in the middle of some ruthless vampires crosshairs. Vampires that will stop at nothing to use her as a pawn in their devious plans.

1st Snail Mail Paperback!!

Hello everyone, I'm so excited!! Today I received my first paperback novel from an author! I have received books for reviews before, some of them through NetGalley, others thanks to the various blog tours I’ve participated (and will continue to), and some because the authors actually contacted me (email me) asking for a review.

But all of them have something particular in common, all of them are ebooks. Don’t get me wrong, I love ebooks, my kindle currently houses 414 of them; most of are still unread, but there at the ready thanks to the wonderful eReader IQ site which sends me a daily email warning me of free books on Amazon. Anyways, I digressed, back on topic; I’m a big ebook supporter and, with a boyfriend that works in the computer industry (which means I have to hear about it day and night), I consider myself pretty technologically savvy. However, that doesn’t mean I no longer care for physical copies.

News: Goodreads Q&A with Jeaniene Frost (Original Transcript)

Hello my amazing followers and lurkers, I’m calling forth all Jeaniene Frost’s Fans to come out of the woodwork!! The Goodreads Group Gotta Have Paranormal Romance with a Kick had a Q&A with the author of the Night Huntress, Night Huntress World and Night Prince novels! I went through the thread and have prepared a transcript for your enjoyment; get ready to get some first-hand news straight from Jeaniene Frost’s keyboard ~.^

The dynamic was that fans will write questions and for two hours Mrs. Frost answered them. The questions will be in bold and the name of the user that originally posted it will be underlined. If I have to make a comment of any sort the text will be in pink. I will transcribe them as the original posted wrote them; I will not change their questions, or the answers.

I will try to get reorganize the questions so that I can distill the information for easier (and faster) access. Those will go on another post later this (or next) week; in the meantime, here is the original transcript in the order that Jeaniene answered the questions:

Jeaniene: Hi everyone! Thanks so much to the moderators for inviting me to come out tonight, and thanks so much to YOU for keeping me from being lonely ;-). I'll start answering the questions already posted, but please feel to free to ask away on any new ones.

Jeaniene: Sorry, I have to say no. Since I started their series, I knew how it would end, and each book brings Cat and Bones closer to their final resolution. Besides, they've earned some time away from the evils of my keyboard, righ? *wink*

Emily wrote: "Ms. Frost, How did you come up with your first book idea? Also, how long did it take you to write it?"

Jeaniene: I came up with the idea for Cat and Bones from a dream. I've always had very vivid dreams and as a teen, I used to write them down and make little (unfinished) stories out of them. Anyway, right around the time that I was having a mild meltdown about turning 30 and having done nothing toward my goal of being an author one day, I had a dream where I saw a half-vampire woman arguing with a full vampire man about why she'd left him years before. In the dream, I knew she still loved him and hadn't wanted to leave, but felt like she had no choice. I also knew he'd been looking for her that whole time and was NOT going to go away quietly. When I woke up, I kept thinking about those people and wondering who they were and how they'd gotten to that point (let alone a half-vampire and a vampire together? How did that happen?). Answering those questions eventually become my first book, Halfway to the Grave.

Review: Lover Reborn (Minor Spoilers)

WARNING: Some of the spoilers in this review reference to events from previous books, namely Lover Awakened, Lover Mine and Lover Unleashed.

Talk about an emotional roller coaster.

Book 10 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series tells the story of Tohrment (Tohr). Tohr’s wife, Wellsie, was killed by a lesser while she was pregnant of their first son. Tohr hasn’t being the same vampire since. First he was seeking to end his life, now he is trying to quench his thirst for revenge by mutilating before killing every single lesser possible. However, fate has other plans for this Brother. Queue the lights over to Lassiter, an angel; literary sent from above with one mission –“get this vampire back on track” (Kindle Locations 1229-1230)

Just so you know, the rumors are true; get yourselves a few tissues or something to stop the waterworks, this book is sad. The book is divided according to the seasons; a full year goes by throughout the story, both beginning and ending on winter.

Let me tell you, Tohr has always hold a dear corner in my heart, he is my third favorite of the brothers, Zsadist being #1 and Rehv, even though not a brother per se, being #2. Still, Tohr has always being that father figure and not just for John Mathews, but for everyone at the Brotherhood. Which is why some of his actions in this book made me want to slap the shit out of him; I wanted to reach in and shake him so bad, maybe even slam him against a wall to see if he still had any reasoning capabilities left in him; yeah, it gets that bad. I mean, there is no way I would have been happy if he had just woken up and completely forgotten about Wellsie, but come on, did he had to be that huge jackass? Apparently yes.
