Let the Battle of the Snow Whites Begin!

Next year will feature a faceoff to see who is the best Snow White; with two different takes on the classic story Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The first trailer for both movies came out recently and both seem to part greatly from the original story that inspired them. Both movies have one thing going on that I love, and is that the damsel in distress concept seems to be thrown out the window. I remember the first time I read the story of Snow White, not the Disney version, the original (or close to the original) were the Evil Queen be spells her not once, but three times!; first (if my memory serves me right) with a string of cloth, second with a comb and then the famous poisoned apple being the last try. The first thing that crossed my mind was, “oh not again! Is she really that stupid?” I was outraged to say the least. So – for me at least – to see the concept of the princess in waiting and sometimes downright useless lady being completely scrapped off in favor of a witty, sassy, go getter type of female is a refreshing move that I hope will give little girls the chance to see that we can do whatever we set our minds to.

The first one to be release – schedule for March 16, 2012 – will be Mirror, Mirror a more comedic take on the story that is directed by Tarsem Singh (director of the currently box office movie Immortals) and starring Lily Collins as Snow White, Armie Hammer as Prince Charming, and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Other starts include Sean Bean as The King and Nathan Lane as Brighton, the Queen’s servant. Judging by the trailer alone this movie is going to be a hilarious one and a most see at that. The Evil Queen is out to get herself married to the Prince, but for that she needs to get rid of Snow White; however Snow White won’t give up her kingdom so easily, and as such – with the help of her dwarf friends – a quests to reclaim the Kingdom commences.

Later on the year the second take will come out on June 1, 2012 and is tilled Snow White and the Huntsman directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Mr. Hotness Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen. Looking at the trailer this one seems to rely heavily on the FXs department. A darker approach to the story, Snow White is banished by the Evil Queen and her executioner becomes her best ally in a journey to overthrown the Queen.

Personally I’ll be watching both movies as they both look very different and very intriguing. Are you going to see either one of these or both? If so, which one and why? If not, why not? Sound your comments below!
